HILLSDALE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Hillsdale College, a Christian classical liberal arts college in southern Michigan, announced at the end of March that they have parted company with a Florida academy, the Tallahassee Classical Academy (TCA), and have revoked the school’s license to use Hillsdale College’s curricular materials.

This happened after the Florida academy forced out their school’s principal, Hope Carrasquilla, who resigned after receiving an ultimatum from the school concerning an issue with teaching that included Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture. Carrasquilla told The Tallahassee Democrat, “It saddens me that my time here had to end this way.”

The David sculpture, one of the most famous statues in the world, is a masterpiece by Italian artist Michelangelo that was created in marble between 1501 and 1504. It is 17-feet tall and is a nude sculpture of the Biblical figure David.

Because of the nudity of the sculpture, a parent of a student at TCA had complained about six graders being exposed to “pornography” during a lesson about Renaissance art where an image of the David sculpture was shown.

Emily Stack Davis, of Hillsdale’s communications department, said in a statement that Hillsdale College provides classical curriculum materials to several K-12 schools across the United Stated as a free resource. She sent on to say “To set the record straight, this drama around teaching Michelangelo’s ‘David’ sculpture, one of the most important works of art in existence, has become a distraction from, and a parody of, the actual aims of classical education. Of course, Hillsdale’s K-12 art curriculum includes Michelangelo’s ‘David’ and other works of art that depict the human form.”

According to the Associated Press, the Chairman of TCA says that the photo of the statue wasn’t the only factor in Carrasquilla’s dismissal and went on to tell Slate online magazine, “Parents are entitled to know anytime their child is being taught a controversial topic and picture.”

While some parents and teachers are planning to protest the principal’s exit at a school board meeting on Monday night, Carrasquilla is not sure she’s interested in taking the job back even if it was offered to her.

According to the Associated Press, the Florence museum that houses the David sculpture, Galleria dell’Accademia, has invited the parents of TCA to visit. The museum’s director, Cecilie Hollberg, said, “To think that David could be pornographic means truly not understanding the contents of the Bible, not understanding Western culture and not understanding Renaissance art.”

Florence Mayor Dario Nardella also tweeted an invite to Carrasquilla to visit, saying that confusing art with pornography was “ridiculous.” Carrasquilla said she was honored by the invitation and that she may accept.

TCA has not responded to the media concerning Hillsdale College’s decision to end their material-sharing partnership.
