The commission, which makes recommendations to the City Council, said the ID cards would be used as a form of photo identification that could replace a state driver’s license or ID for people who are unable to attain either. The commission said the program would be beneficial for for what they referred to as “underserved communities.”
The East Lansing Human Rights Commission said that because of the area’s refugee population, they want to create programs that give everyone an equal opportunity.
In January, the East Lansing City Council voted to become a sanctuary city. That means the East Lansing Police Department is no longer cooperating with Federal Law Enforcement, like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). At that time, a city employee told Michigan News Source that the police department rarely encounter situations like dealing with illegal immigrants and ICE, so the move by the council would not affect day-to-day operations.
The commission plans to have a written statement in support of the program ready to present to the city council by July.
