FLINT, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley said he is taking precautions after he says people made credible threats against him.
Neeley is driving around in an unmarked police car assigned to his office in order to secure the safety of staff when traveling to and from events.
However, the move has raised a number of questions, including why an unmarked vehicle adds an extra layer of protection. First Ward Councilman Eric Mays wants the vehicle moved to the mayor’s budget since other city officials pay for their own vehicles and gas.
According to a report from our media partners at The Centre Square, the Flint Mayor’s office had a $476,983 budget in 2021. Those expenses have increased to $1.2 million for 2024; Neeley receives a $125,000 yearly salary.
Earlier this week, the city banned the public from using its parking garage. Mayor Neeley issued an executive order that closes the parking area to everyone except city staff members and their passengers working on official business. Trespassers could be arrested.
