FLINT, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Former Genesee County clerk John Gleason is facing new charges tied to alleged campaign finance violations.

Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson said he first became aware of the new case just weeks after Gleason was charged with illegally performing a wedding last year.

Swanson said a criminal investigation found that Gleason returned checks to donors, but then asked for them to donate to his new legal defense fund set up to help pay expenses from the illegal marriage case.

However, Swanson said that money never made it to the legal defense fund. Instead, Gleason is accused of depositing the money into his personal accounts and spending it on personal expenses. Swanson said the alleged fraud adds up to about $33,500.

In his previous case, Gleason pleaded guilty to performing a marriage outside his jurisdiction. He resigned as Genesee County’s clerk/register of deeds and agreed never to seek elected office again as part of a plea deal.

Gleason was accused of performing a marriage in Shiawassee County and then pressuring employees in the Genesee County Clerk’s Office to backdate an application and license that would make the ceremony legal.
