LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – While Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Michigan Democrats are celebrating the signing of a bill that keeps companies from retaliating against employees who’ve opted for abortions, one attorney is pushing back and saying the so-called problem never existed to begin with.
Whitmer signed a bill on Wednesday that amends Michigan’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to prohibit employers from treating a worker differently for having an abortion.

“This is the most idiotic thing,” said attorney David Kallman. “I highly doubt they could show one instance where someone has been discriminated against for having an abortion.”
The bill, which passed along party lines in the Democrat-led House and Senate, falls in line with an amendment to Michigan’s Constitution which protects abortion rights, Whitmer’s office said. Whitmer has consistently said “abortion is healthcare” and that she will “fight like hell” to protect abortion rights through all nine months of pregnancy.
While Whitmer stated no one should face discrimination because they exercised their constitutional rights, Kallman said having an abortion is not a trait like race or sex, which Elliott-Larsen seeks to protect.
“Is this what Elliott-Larsen will become? Whatever the political trend of the day is?” Kallman said. “If that’s the case you might as well get rid of Elliott-Larsen and write one sentence: no one can discriminate against anyone for anything.”
