DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – In April, Jameson Williams, who was the 2022 first-round draft pick by the Lions, was suspended six games for gambling by the NFL. He spoke for the first time to the media on Thursday afternoon. He stated, “I didn’t knowingly break the policy and was sick when I learned I had broken the rules and was subject to league discipline.”

Williams did not gamble on the NFL but did gamble on other sports items while at the Lions facility which broke the NFL rule. He said, “I was sick. I was hurt. I didn’t know things like this was coming. But like I said, it took me some time. I’ve thought about the better days moving forward.”

In the recent weeks, he has been with the team practicing and working through the ACL tear he received in the national championship game. His rookie season was more of a red-shirt season as he recovered from the injury after being the No. 12 pick. He didn’t play his first game in the NFL until December but his quickness did stick out.

He has taken part in the recent OTAs and the offseason training programs to get better coming back after his suspension.

He says, “I got here with my team. Run some routes. You didn’t see me running routes this time (last year). You saw me walking around with a football in my hand. It’s been good to be out here. I’m just trying to get better every day.”

Head coach Dan Campbell commented on Williams and what he saw this spring saying, “I feel like there’s a little better route detail right now I’ve seen over the last few weeks. That was kind of the point of emphasis. He ran a couple routes (Wednesday) that were – he’s hitting the afterburner and drops his weight and puts his foot in the ground 18 yards and comes back to the quarterback – those things are pretty impressive.”

Williams can practice with the team up until the beginning of the season when his six-game suspension will start.
