DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Jonatan Berggren has been named the Detroit Sports Media Association Rookie of the Year for his season on the ice. The right wing, who is only 22 years old, played in 67 games and was amongst the top rookies in the NHL in scoring with 15 goals, 28 points, five power play goals, none power player points, and a 15.3 shooting percentage.

In this season, he had the highest shooting percentage of any Red Wings rookie since 2002-03 when it was Henrik Zetterberg. Berggren scored his first goal on Nov. 15 at Anaheim and collected his first assist in his debut against New York on Nov. 10. In his first nine games, he had six points becoming the eighth Red Wings rookie in the last 30 years to record at least six points in his first nine contests.

The Uppsala, Sweden, native was drafted by the Red Wings in 2018 in the NHL Entry Draft. He made his American professional debut in 2021-22 with the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffons. He set franchise records for a rookie in assists (43), points (64), game winning goals (7), and overtime goals (3) in 70 games. He was the AHL Rookie of the Month in April.

He will receive his award prior to a Red Wings home game in the 2023-24 season. The Rookie of the Year award dates back to the 1948-49 NHL season.
