CARO, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – After five years in the making, the new $85 million Caro Psychiatric Hospital in Tuscola County is finally complete.

The new facility spans 130,000 square feet and houses four separate units. It has 100 beds, which is half the amount of beds offered by the previous facility. In addition, the new center has a library, an art room, a fitness center, and a greenhouse.

Caro has been the home of the original facility since 1913. The plans to replace it began in 2018, but construction paused after rumors circulated that the facility might close. The Caro Center is one of the biggest employers in the city of Caro and Tuscola County.

The city fought against a 2019 proposal from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to close the facility.

All patients are expected to be transferred from the old facility to the new one by the end of the month.
