The contract is for $500,000 and began this week. It runs through September and covers what are traditionally the busiest months of the year for 911 calls, according to the department.

Detroit will add 11 additional units from Macomb Universal Ambulance to the seven that currently serve the city.

All Detroit Fire Department employees are currently being trained in fire and EMS services, but many EMS workers have left their jobs recently.

Detroit currently has 22 ambulances on the road and officials say the additional units will put the largest number of ambulances on the streets in decades.
