WASHINGTON (Michigan News Source) – The U.S. Supreme Court struck down President Joe Biden’s $400 billion plan to cancel or reduce federal student loan debts for millions of Americans.

The 6-3 decision said the Biden administration overstepped its authority with the plan. That means borrowers must continue to pay back loans that will resume in the fall.

SCOTUS held that the administration needed Congress’ endorsement before undertaking so costly a program.

The Biden administration cited COVID-19 concerns as the reason for continuing to pause repayments.

A White House official, who spoke anonymously, said Biden plans to announce a new set of actions regarding student loan borrowers on Friday.
