TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Some people eat junk food as a snack, others consider it a meal, especially on long car rides after dropping into a “Grab and Go” after filling up your gas tank.

Junk food is defined by Merriam-Webster as “food that is high in calories but low in nutritional content.” The second definition says, “something that is appealing or enjoyable but of little or no real value.”
In other words, it’s all the stuff you love and all the stuff that’s bad for you.
Oreos, Doritos, a Hershey candy bar, Cheetos, chocolate chip cookies, Diet Coke, bacon cheeseburgers, chicken nuggets, Skittles, Twinkies… I’m sure your mouth is watering just reading this.
It’s food (or drink) that is high in fats, sugar, salt, carbs and calories.
Again, all the stuff that’s bad for you.
Friday is National Junk Food Day and casinos.com had their research and analytics team do a study to see what everyone in the country is eating. In Michigan, the favorite snacks are Sour Patch Kids candy, Starburst candy and Pringles potato chips.

Nationally, Michigan’s choices align with the rest of the country with the addition of Skittles. Sour Patch Kids was a runaway favorite across the sugared plains. Other favorites in the land of liberty, sugar and salt include animal crackers, Fritos, gummy bears, Funyons and Cheez-its.
Not everyone will be happy with the list though. The casinos.com website says, “Oreos will be disappointed with their showing, but Kit Kat will be pleased to have been the most heavily featured chocolate bar.”
The researchers used Google Trends to measure the level of interest in 32 of the nation’s favorite junk food/snacks, excluding fast food restaurants, and instead looking at snacks that are available to purchase in stores. Data was collected for a year from July of last year to July of this year.
Soda and chewing gum were also excluded from the study but that doesn’t mean that you have to spend National Junk Food Day without a nice soda or two.
Happy snacking, Michigan.
