On Tuesday, Nessel’s office charged sixteen electors with criminal felonies for allegedly trying to award the state’s Electoral College votes to former President Donald Trump in 2020. Nessel’s charges accuse the electors of using a phony certificate in the 2020 election despite Trump’s 154,188-vote loss in the Michigan.
“…challenges to elections are common occurrences,” the party said in its statement. “In the 2016 election, seven Democratic members of the House filed objections.”
The Michigan GOP also accused Nessel displaying “authoritarian tendencies and ambitions.”

The 16 people charged are supporters of former President Donald Trump. They include a Michigan Republican National Committee member, the mayor of Wyoming, the grassroots vice chairwoman of the Michigan GOP and Meshawn Maddock, the former co-chair of the Michigan Republican Party.
Maddock spoke on The Steve Gruber Show on Wednesday. She called Nessel’s move a “political prosecution…persecution…and not a criminal persecution.”
Nessel’s office said this remains an ongoing investigation which could include more charges against additional defendants.
