EAST LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Survivors of convicted child molester Larry Nassar are suing Michigan State University after the school refused to release documents related to the disgraced doctor’s tenure at the school.

The group of survivors and parents says the lawsuit seeks accountability rather than money from MSU. In 2021, Attorney General Dana Nessel asked for more than 6,000 pages of documents from MSU during an investigation into the school’s alleged complicit behavior regarding Nassar and his so-called treatment of female patients.

MSU officials cited “attorney-client privilege” as a reason not to release the documents to Nessel. In addition, the school refused to release emails which detailed the decision-making by the Board of Trustees. MSU is not commenting regarding the ongoing litigation.

“We can’t heal as a community until we know that everyone who enabled a predator is accountable,” said Nassar survivor Melissa Brown Hudecz.

Another Nassar survivor, Elizabeth Maurer, echoed similar thoughts. “I just want this to be over. I want to be a normal college student and a normal college athlete,” Maurer said. “It’s really, really hard to heal when you know there’s still answers to a lot of your questions out there.”

Nassar is serving 40 to 175 years in prison after being convicted in 2018 to molesting hundreds of women and girls, some of whom were the nation’s top gymnasts. Nassar called the sexual assaults “treatment.”

“We contend that board members made a behind-closed-doors secret decision not to release the records in blatant violation of the Open Meetings Act,” said attorney Azzam Elder. “If you’re going to lie about it, at least have the guts to do it publicly,” Elder said.

The suit wants the school to turn over emails and other communications citing the Freedom of Information Act and the Open Meetings Act going forward.

Earlier this month, a fellow inmate stabbed Nassar multiple times after he heard Nassar make a lewd comment while Wimbledon women’s tennis. According to several reports, Nassar remarked “I wish there were girls playing.”
