DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – The search for two-year-old Wynter Cole Smith came to an abrupt and sad end on Wednesday night at 6:50 p.m. after police announced her body had been found in an alley on the east side of Detroit.

Wynter had been missing since Sunday after being kidnapped from her mother’s house in Lansing. Police say the woman’s ex-boyfriend, 26-year-old Rashad Trice, kidnapped the girl after stabbing and assaulting her mother several times. Trice has been charged with eight felonies. Police issued an Amber Alert.

Multiple law enforcement agencies searched for the girl, and the FBI offered a $25,000 reward for her safe return.

Police arrested Trice on Monday but Wynter was not with him. He had stolen the mother’s car from Lansing and drove with the girl to Detroit. Trice faces charges in connection with the Lansing attack during which Wynter was taken. No charges have been filed in Wynter’s death as of press time.

“It will take time to carefully collect evidence that we need to help bring the person responsible to justice,” said FBI agent Devin Kowalski.

Trice, a violent habitual fourth offender, is being held without bond.

Ingham County Prosecutor John Dewane, who represents Lansing where Wynter was kidnapped, released this statement: “We are devastated by the tragic news that Wynter Cole Smith was found deceased today. Our hearts are with Wynter’s family as they begin to process and grieve the unnecessary loss of a beautiful two-year old child. As this investigation transitions from a missing person to a homicide investigation, our office supports the efforts of our law enforcement partners at the state and federal level to hold those responsible for Wynter’s death accountable for their actions.”
