DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – After Max Clark was drafted at no. 3 on Sunday, the Detroit Tigers added infielder Kevin McGonigle at no. 37 and then Max Anderson in Round 2 (no. 45). In the first three picks, the Tigers added two infielders and an outfielder/pitcher.
“I think we’re really pleased with the preparation from our whole group to give us opportunities to weigh each pick, and the picture of the Draft class entirely,” said Assistant General Manager Rob Metzler. “Every pick has an influence on another pick, because there’s a bonus pool system. We’re going to be as aggressive as possible to use all our resources. You have to maximize the opportunity as best you can, and I feel like we were able to do that throughout Day 1 and Day 2.”

McGonigle is a short stop from Monsignor Bonner High School in Pennsylvania. The 5-11, 185 pound product from Aldan was named to the 2022 PG All-American Classic. Tigers amateur scouting director Mark Conner said about McGonigle, “He is one of the best pure high school hitters in the class. His bat-to-ball skills are up there probably to anybody in the class based on evaluations of our staff. He hit on Team USA, he hit throughout the summer and every time that our scouts went there in the spring, he continued to hit.”
In round two, the Tigers took Nebraska’s Anderson who is second baseman. Tigers President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris said, “We think Max is an elite talent. He was the best player on our board at that pick, and we are thrilled that he got to our pick. We think he is a five-tool player, and I think that label gets thrown around way too much in our industry. We think Max has all five. It’s really hard to find a potential impact centerfielder who can change the game on both sides of the ball. Max can do that.”
This past year, Anderson hit .414 with 21 home runs in 244 at-bats as a junior. He led the Big Ten in hitting and a 1.224 on-base plus slugging percentage.
Detroit added several other players in rounds 3 through 10 on Monday.
