LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Following a short period of low gas prices, the American Automobile Association is projecting that prices are about to do an about face at the pump. 

“Rising oil prices, higher gas demand, and tighter supply may push pump prices higher,” said Adrienne Woodland, spokeswoman, AAA-The Auto Club Group.

Although Michigan gas prices are going up, the national average still remains higher than the state according to AAA estimates, placing it at $3.88 per gallon.  For a 15-gallon tank, Michigan customers are paying roughly $55 according to the auto group. 

In general, drivers in Michigan are paying roughly $3.72 per gallon for regular unleaded. 

Currently, Ann Arbor is tied for the highest average with $3.78 per gallon with Metro Detroit, followed closely by Traverse City at $3.70 per gallon. On the other hand, Benton Harbor is recorded at having the lowest average with customers paying about $3.60 per gallon, and Flint customers paying about $3.65 per gallon. 

Gas prices were demonstrating a general decrease especially ahead of Labor Day Weekend, when prices dropped at least seven cents per gallon and the state average was $3.69 per gallon for regular unleaded. 

AAA also suggested some ways to try and save at the pump. 

• Combine errands to limit driving time.
• Shop around for the best gas prices in your community.
• Consider paying cash. Some retailers charge extra per gallon for customers who pay with a credit card.
• Remove excess weight in your vehicle.
• Drive conservatively. Aggressive acceleration and speeding reduces fuel economy.
