LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – It seems like an easy process – write a resolution condemning terrorism, send it to the floor for a unanimous vote, and move on to other state business. However, that’s not what is happening in the Michigan House when it comes to a resolution condemning the terrorist attacks against Israel by Hamas.

A resolution to condemn the terrorist attacks by Hamas on Israel and release hostages is still in the House Government Operations committee. That prompted State Representative and Minority Floor Leader Bryan Posthumus (R-Kent County) to write a letter to the chair, Rep. Tullio Liberati (D-Allen Park), and immediately request a vote.

“It is our belief that, no matter one’s political leaning, the condemning of terrorism, indiscriminate killing of innocent civilians, and beheading of babies is not complicated and should not be political,” Posthumus said in the letter. “America overwhelmingly supports Israel’s right to defend itself. Michigan overwhelmingly supports Israel’s right to defend itself. Our body should stand resolute against those that commit terrorism of any form.”

Posthumus said when Russia invaded Ukraine, the House moved on a resolution that week. “The people of Michigan deserve elected leaders that are quick to speak out against terrorists. We’ve reached a point where Chair Liberati and Democratic Leadership must either bring this to the floor, or officially identify who specifically is causing these holdups.”

Michigan News Source reached out to Rep. Liberati and Rep. Laurie Pohutsky (D-Livonia) who also serves on the committee to ask why the resolution is being held up in committee. Neither responded by press time.

“If no action is taken, expect us to get much louder and much sharper,” Posthumus said. “Our next complaint will be significantly larger than a simple letter.”
