GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Another candidate has entered the race for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat. Former Republican Congressman Peter Meijer announced early Monday that he’s running to replace retiring Senator Debbie Stabenow.
The Grand Rapids native and veteran served in Congress from 2021 to 2023. Voters ousted him from his first and only term in Congress after he voted to impeach President Donald Trump.

“We are in dark and uncertain times, but we have made it through worse,” Meijer said in a press release. “The challenges are great, but so is our country. If we are to see another great American century, we need leaders who aren’t afraid to be bold, will do the work, and can’t be bought.”
Meijer joins roughly a dozen Republicans who are also vying for Democrat Debbie Stabenow’s seat who announced she’s retiring in November 2024.
