EAST LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan State University interim President Teresa Woodruff pledged a “new MSU” in September after the investigation and subsequent firing of head football coach Mel Tucker amid sexual harassment allegations. However, the hunt for a new president appears to be more of the same.

UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz is seeking the top job at Michigan State University and elsewhere amid pressure to leave his current post from UNC System President Peter Hans and the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees, multiple sources tell WBTV.

WBTV reports that those multiple sources said Hans and Guskiewicz have been in discussion for months about the chancellor’s departure. Sources said discussion of Guskiewicz’s departure from the chancellor post started in earnest this summer as his relationship with the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees continued to deteriorate.

Guskiewicz confirmed in a statement last week that he is the sole finalist for the open job as president at MSU. The statement did not say whether Guskiewicz would take the role.

Problems between the MSU president and the Board of Trustees is not new. During the past five years, MSU has seen five different presidents come and go. Lou Anna K. Simon left in 2018 amid her role in the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal. John Engler served as interim president in 2018 and 2019 until Satish Udpa took over the role. His presidency was short-lived and Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr. served until 2022. He cited problems with the Board of Trustees as one of the reasons for stepping down. Dr. Teresa K. Woodruff has served since Stanley’s exit.
