PONTIAC, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Court documents filed this week show the 17-year-old Oxford High School shooter told a forensic psychiatrist he never asked his parents for therapy. In addition, Ethan Crumbley admitted he lied when he texted a friend about asking for mental health help.

Defense attorney Shannon Smith, who is representing the shooter’s mother Jennifer Crumbley, disclosed this information in one of several filings. She stated she discovered the new information in a box of materials received last week pertaining to the shooter’s mental health, along with expert interviews where the shooter shared about his past and struggles.

“This information is clearly critical to the Crumbleys, who have been criticized repeatedly by the prosecution for not listening to the shooter’s request for therapy,” Smith wrote in the filing. She is also seeking more time to prepare for the trial.

Jennifer Crumbley and her husband James Crumbley are both charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter stemming from their son’s shooting spree which left four students dead and seven other people injured in November 2021. Up until recently, the Crumbleys represented a unified front. That changed this week when a judge granted them both separate trials.

Ethan Crumbley admitted to the killings and will be sentenced next month.
