This estimate comes from a study by analysts at the online pharmacy Now Patient, using data from the World Population Review.

Hawaii is the most expensive state to hold a funeral, costing the average family $15,203. The cheapest place to hold a funeral is in Mississippi which costs about $6,568. Michigan ranks #40 in the list which puts dying in the state cheaper than in 39 other states.

Over at the website Funeralocity, the costs are listed with a few more specifics. They have a traditional full service burial at $8,924, an “affordable” burial at $4,982, full service cremation at $6,530 and direct cremation at $2,246.

According to their website, traditional burial includes funeral home basic service fee, embalming and care of body, a visitation or wake prior to the funeral, a service at either church or funeral home chapel, a funeral procession to the grave site and a committal service prior to the burial.
