WASHINGTON (Michigan News Source) – Things aren’t looking good for President Biden’s 2024 presidential prospects in Michigan according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS (Social Science Research Solutions) online and by telephone with a random sample of 1,197 registered voters surveyed from November 29th to December 6th. Their polling shows that Biden is trailing the former president by ten points. Like a political phoenix, the Donald is rising again and that’s worrying some in the Democrat party who have less than a year to turn things around.

The ten-point lead is a significant jump from the survey that was done by the same polling team in early November when Trump only led Biden by four points in a hypothetical rematch. Even though CNN had said at the time, “Neither candidate has much room for growth,” that doesn’t appear to be the case.

What’s the difference between then and now?

Besides increased chaos at the border, there are accelerated protests over Biden’s response to the Hamas attack in October. Although the CNN polling data points to Biden’s loss of support among women, the youth and union members being factors in his bad polling, it’s also widely reported that the president is losing support among pro-Palestinians in his party as well. In fact, last week, Nasser Beydoun, a Democratic U.S. Senate candidate from Dearborn, published an op-ed in the Detroit News with the title “Im a Democrat and I wont be voting for Biden.”

In the op-ed, Beydoun wrote, President Bidens handling of the Israel-Gaza conflict has thrown his presidency into a tailspin with anti-war, Arab American and Muslim voters. These key constituencies in swing states overwhelmingly supported him in the last election.”

Beydoun continued to say, He has failed at every turn to show me and my community any sense that he hears us and cares at all about making our voices heard…I am a Democratic candidate for Michigans open U.S. Senate seat, and I will not support Bidens re-election. It would be the equivalent of buying a ticket on the Titanic. If the Democratic party wants any chance to win in November, President Biden must not be the nominee.”

Newsweek has reported that in their polling by Redfield and Wilton Strategies, only 42% of Gen Z voters (aged 18-26) and 48% of millennials (aged 27-42) agree with how Biden has responded to the war between Israel and Hamas. Newsweek also reports, Michigan has the highest number of Arab Americans in the country and in 2020, 64 percent of Muslim voters nationally supported Biden, compared with 35 percent who supported Trump, according to Associated Press VoteCast. If Biden loses this key base, Michigan could flip to the Republicans in 2024 once more.”

With a gain for Trump of six points in Michigan in just one month, that might be a possibility.

Biden Trails in More States.

But Biden isn’t just trailing Trump in Michigan. He’s also behind in Georgia by five points in the same poll. The poll also shows that broad majorities of voters in Michigan and Georgia hold a negative view of the current president in matters of policy (57%), performance (60%) and sharpness (69%) with the poll showing only 35% of Michiganders approve of Biden’s job performance. Even among Democrats, one-quarter of registered voters disapprove of Biden. Additionally, voters who said they didn’t cast a ballot in 2020 are breaking for Trump in Michigan by 40 points. Trump is also ahead of Biden by 21 points among working-class (non-college) voters.

A new Bloomberg/Morning Consult poll has similar results and has concluded that Biden trails Trump in seven swing states – Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Their polling has a smaller gap between the two presidents with Biden trailing Trump by 4 points in Michigan. In addition, only 19% of registered voters in the state said they had a “very favorable” impression of President Biden, with independents sitting at rock bottom with a 9% favorable impression. Bloomberg also points out a drop in support of Biden among Black voters.

Real Clear Politics also has Trump ahead of Biden 47.3 to 44.1 in a general election matchup.

With all of the bad polling being reported about the current president, some Democrats and those in the media are hitting the panic button. That includes CNN themselves whose anchor Katie Hunt, while discussing the latest CNN poll, reported with a frown, “The news is not great for President Biden and his campaign.”

Some folks are a little less dramatic. They are concerned but not totally discouraged by the polling numbers. That includes Michigan Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Dingell who appeared on Fox News’ America Reports with John Roberts on Thursday to talk about the new CNN poll. When asked what she’s been telling the White House, Dingell pointed out that she doesn’t believe any polls because no one was listening to her back in 2015 and 2016 when she went against conventional wisdom and warned that Trump had a good chance of winning Michigan. Dingell said about the new CNN poll, “I think it’s a snapshot in time. I think there is real work that has to be done in Michigan to tell the story of what the president has done, what he’s delivered on, what he’s accomplished. And to draw the contrast between our president currently and President Donald Trump.”

Dingell added, “What I feel good about is that it’s getting the attention. It’s getting the attention of those that matter. People understand that Michigan is a competitive state this time. It gets taken for granted too often…we’re going to roll up our sleeves and we’re going to make sure that people know what’s at stake when they walk into that poll a year from now.”

Dingell also brought up the pro-Palestinian issue with CNN’s Kasie Hunt by saying “The mid-east has complicated Michigan in a way I’ve never seen before in my lifetime.”

Looking back at the last presidential election in Michigan, Biden had beat Donald Trump by 3-points in 2020 with 154,000 more votes than the former president. However, abortion won’t be on the ballot this time. Many in the media and political circles have pointed to that issue as driving many of Michigan’s youth to the polls and propelling Biden and the Michigan Democrats to their victories.

Are the youth of Michigan still supporting 81-year-old Biden?

According to CNN, younger voters in both Michigan and Georgia are particularly unlikely to see Biden as aligning with their vision of a president, with only 9% of voters younger than 45 saying he is exactly what theyd like to see in a president in terms of policy positions 9% in saying he is exactly what they want in terms of his ability to understand the problems of people like them. Younger voters in Michigan are actually breaking in Trump’s favor in a hypothetical matchup (49% to 38%). That’s huge.

There are many issues causing Biden’s numbers to drop including the economy, inflation, immigration, and Israel which are top concerns of many. Biden’s response to the Hamas attack is continuing to cause a rift in the party and although the voters side with the Democrats on abortion matters, they tend to side with the GOP on immigration. Stanley Greenberg of the Financial Times says that there is a “way back” for Biden by paying attention to the three things that Trump “gets” but the current president seems to be ignoring – the economy, crime and surging migration. Greenberg says that Biden has to ditch his “deception” of Bidenomics and talk about what he’s been doing to alleviate high prices and to get America cheaper energy.

Taking all of the polling data into consideration, the news is bad news for Trump as well as Biden in the CNN poll which reports that only 53% of registered voters in Michigan say they are satisfied with the candidates that they have to choose from. That leaves a pretty large lane open for third-party candidates including independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the candidate who could emerge on the “No Labels” ticket.
