DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – A Saturday night holiday party for the 13th Congressional District turned from merry and bright to downright raucous at a Midtown Detroit restaurant after pro-Palestinian protestors crashed the party.

The event, which featured Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Detroit), turned into an angry shoving match when about 20 protesters started chanting and disrupting the event.

Thanedar began speaking at the Common Pub when the protestors chanted, “Shri you can’t hide, we charge you with genocide.” While Thanedar has called for a ceasefire in the region, they said he has not spoken about it directly.

Some of the party guests began shoving the protesters out the door, creating a chaotic scene.

Thanedar spoke out on social media after the event, saying he values the First Amendment and denounced the violence.

The clash proves how the Israel-Hamas War hits home for many in the Detroit area, which is home to a large Arab and Jewish population.

While Thanedar has remained somewhat under the radar on the issue, his colleague Rep. Rashida Tlaib has not. She’s refused to denounce her ongoing antisemitic statements and has been censured by Congress.
