LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Proposal 1, which voters passed in November 2022 and focused on transparency for government officials, has been signed into law.

The bills, signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Friday, will require public officials and candidates seeking elected office to file financial disclosure reports with the Department of State.

“State government must be open, transparent, and accountable to the people it serves,” said Governor Whitmer, who has boasted the goal of making her administration the most open in Michigan’s history.

However, some have described the legislation as “a con job” with “glaring loopholes.” Those included disclosure of spousal income and gifts from political nonprofits.
