Until a special election is held to fill those seats, House Speaker Joe Tate (D-Detroit) and Republican Leader Matt Hall (R-Richland Township) may set aside their differences.
Rep. Hall said, “Speaker Tate and I met [Thursday] and discussed shared power for the evenly divided House of Representatives in 2024.” Hall continued, “House Republicans stand ready to forge a bipartisan power arrangement so we can govern in the middle and build a more affordable, safe, and competitive Michigan.”
Hall called for a shared power agreement; in addition, he proposed a House rule change to trigger a bipartisan arrangement.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer called for a special primary election to be held on January 30, 2024 and the general election to be held on April 16, 2024.
Speaker Tate could not be reached for comment.
