LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Michigan Democratic Party appears to be focused on winning elections in 2024.

On Wednesday, party leaders announced a statewide campaign to recruit thousands of Democrats to run for local office.

“What we know is that having more Democrats running locally boosts Democratic turnout and enthusiasm,” said an email to supporters. “This program is part of an effort between the Michigan Dems and Contest Every Race to help ensure Michigan turns out for President Biden and flips seats down the ballot.”

Michigan Democrats are targeting 6,516 local offices. This includes county commissioners, city council members, school board members, and other local office holders across Michigan’s 83 counties. Organizers are aiming for 350 Democrats to file for office by the April 23rd deadline.

Meanwhile, Michigan Republicans appear too embroiled in inter-party fighting to be concerned with supporting GOP candidates. Currently, the party says it has voted to oust Chair Kristina Karamo. She views the meeting and subsequent vote as illegitimate and is fighting to keep that spot. Malinda Pego is acting chair, for now.

Michigan News Source reached out to the Michigan GOP to find out what strategy the party is implementing to elect Republicans this year, and how they are going to combat the Democratic campaign. They did not respond to our request for comment.
