LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Change.org is a site that allows its users to start petitions and call for signatures from around the world. Here are some of the issues Michigan residents have raised over the years that have attracted large support or remained popular over time.

End declawing in Michigan.

This petition, started by the Paw Project of California, calls for support on two Michigan House bills that would ban animal declawing in the state. Nearly 35,000 Change.org users have signed the petition, which was started in April of last year.

“Declawing is amputation, whether performed by scalpel, clippers, or laser,” the petition reads. “We believe there is never a reason to declaw for non-therapeutic reasons (that is, unless surgery were necessary to treat animals’ medical conditions).”

Both bills were referred to the Committee on Agriculture and have not been passed.

Recall Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Several of these petitions have been listed on the site, mostly dating back to 2019 and 2020. One of these petitions, created by Michigan Libertarians, has attracted over 40,000 supporters and remains on the first page of Michigan issues at Change.org.

Petitioners posting on this topic complained about rising gas taxes, an old ban on using chloroquine (an anti-malarial drug) to treat COVID-19, and a ban on sales of flavored vape juice.

Speaking of which …

Remove the ban on flavored vape juices.

This petition, started in 2019 to coincide with then-newly passed legislation, has attracted more than 22,000 signatures.

Several types of flavored e-cigarettes are effectively illegal at the federal level under FDA regulations, which prohibit the sale of flavored cartridge-based e-cigarettes except tobacco and menthol.

But federal rules leave many loopholes for certain kinds of e-cigarette devices, which has left an opening for state legislatures to create their own guidelines. This petition argues that bans on flavored e-cigarettes are not intended to prevent kids from vaping and that they will only hurt nicotine business owners.

Stop 5G cell tower deployment.

This issue in Michigan received national attention when parents raised concerns over a 5G tower constructed on top of Wyandotte Elementary School.

More recently, the topic returned as a local interest as residents are discussing a new potential 5G tower in Flushing Township.

“My biggest fear is that we don’t have a long-term study on this,” Kaitlynn Kirby, a Flushing resident, told WNEM. “You know, there’s regulations and testing that goes into it from the start, but what does that look like in 20 years?”

The Change.org petition, one of several on the topic, was started in 2020 and has collected over 50,000 signatures.

Say “no” to new gas taxes.

This petition, created in 2019, is among Michigan’s most popular in recent years, amassing nearly 110,000 supportive signatures.

Currently, the Michigan gas tax stands at 30 cents per gallon, higher than last year due to automatic inflation adjustments built into the law.
