GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – More than 20,000 Grand Rapids area residents remain under a boil water advisory as of Tuesday afternoon, but initial tests revealed good news.

City officials said no harmful organisms have been found in initial water samples.

The water system has been flushed, and the city is preparing for another round of testing to confirm the water’s safety.

The city of Grand Rapids is continuing to hand out free bottles of water to impacted residents.

The water distribution is from the city and grocery retailer SpartanNash and is happening until 8 p.m. at the fire station at 1635 Leonard Street NE.

In addition, food and beverage businesses in Grand Rapids have taken a hit from the boil water advisory.

The water main break is putting a large strain on restaurants and coffee shops. Many don’t have the capacity to boil large enough quantities of water to serve all customers adequately and are forced to order water from outside of the city.

Several businesses, such as The Nightwatch Lounge, Lyon Street Cafe, and Stovetop Coffee Roasters have temporarily closed down.
