BIG RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – During the Mecosta County Planning Commission gathering last night, Jason Kruse, the newly elected Green Charter Township Supervisor, delivered a letter from the township’s legal representatives.

Letter sent concerning injunction.

The letter, reported by Joseph Cella and Pete Hoekstra from the Michigan-China Economic and Security Review Group, outlines that the township is seeking a preliminary and permanent injunction against Mecosta County and its Planning Commission.

The objective is to impede Gotion’s site plan and/or zoning approval application, urging the court to halt the processing of Gotion’s application by the county.

Township’s planning commission scheduled before county’s review of site plan.

The strategic move by Green Charter Township also includes the activation of a planning commission scheduled to come into effect on April 27, 2024. This commission will wield authority over the zoning and planning aspects of the Gotion project.

Consequently, Green Charter Township will have its zoning ordinance in place on an interim basis, regulating Gotion, before Mecosta County can take any decisive actions on the site plan for their EV battery plant. The plan was submitted by Gotion to the county on Friday, March 1st and the county isn’t planning to have their first special meeting on the site plan review until May 1st.

Will community’s voices finally be heard?

This news about the injunctions is particularly advantageous for the residents of Green Charter Township, as it signifies hope that their oppositional voices to the project are finally being heard.

The community had previously witnessed a division among residents due to the influence of government and business elites over the wishes of township and county residents who didn’t want the Gotion project in their back yard for numerous reasons including their close ties to China.

Cella said about the latest turn of events, “All of this said, this is good news for the citizens of Green Charter Township, where the civic order was ruptured by government and business elites, and civic order is now being restored. Nothing can be taken for granted. The fight continues.”
