SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Friday at 6:00 p.m. marks the opening of the Soo Locks for the 2024 shipping season.
But it’s not just good for business. It’s also an event that has become an annual celebration gathering place in Sault Ste. Marie.

Each year people gather to see which ship will pass through the Soo Locks first. This year the winner is the Joseph L. Block.
The 728-foot ship arrived in Sault Ste. Marie on Thursday afternoon 2:40.
Before the Block leaves through the Soo Locks, city dignitaries will welcome the captain and crew on board, presenting them with a plaque and gifts from Sault Ste. Marie.
