LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A federal judge appointed by President Joe Biden in 2021 has rejected a lawsuit brought by 11 Republican lawmakers that challenged the constitutionality of proposals approved by Michigan voters in 2018 and 2022.
Federal Judge Jane Beckering granted Attorney General Dana Nessel’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit against Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, and Michigan Elections Director Jonathan Brater.

Another lawsuit against Benson was recently dismissed, concerning taking dead voters off the state’s voter rolls.
Benson said about the latest dismissal, “I’m grateful to see the judge dismiss the lawsuit that attempted to deny voters their right to enact laws that reflect their values.”
Voters approved Proposal 3 in 2018 which allowed no-reason absentee voting and same-day voter registration. Among other things, 2022’s Proposal 3 triggered nine days of early in-person voting and absentee ballot drop boxes.
Both proposals are now part of Michigan’s constitution.
