LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – It’s that time of year where many Michigan teenagers will be trading books and laptops for flipping burgers and mowing lawns.
The Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget released its summer teen employment forecast for June–August 2024, saying close to 250,000 Michigan teens are forecasted to seek employment this summer. Wayne Rourke, labor market information director for the Michigan Center for Data and Analytics, said “Teen unemployment should remain low due to the job demand in industries that typically hire younger seasonal workers.”

The overall population of Michigan teens ages 16 to 19 has been declining since it peaked in 2008 at 614,000. This year, the number of 16- to 19-year-olds in Michigan is expected to fall below 500,000, with close to half in that age group looking for work or holding a job this summer.
Job demand in Michigan remains elevated in industries like retail and food service this year. Officials said that could prove to beneficial for teens since they require minimal education, experience, or training. Another bright spot this summer includes the ongoing demand in industries that have low barriers of entry but also hire younger workers.
