SAGINAW, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan has its first positive mosquito samples for the Jamestown Canyon virus this year. Health officials say mosquitoes collected from Saginaw County tested positive for the virus.
The virus spreads when mosquitoes feed on infected deer or other animals, and then bite humans. Symptoms of the virus include fever, headache, and fatigue. In rare cases, the virus can affect the brain or spinal cord.

The time between being affected and noticing symptoms is typically two to 14 days. Half of all cases require hospitalization, but the chance of dying from JCV is rare. The virus was first identified in Colorado in 1961.
