DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Becoming just the third Detroit Tiger to accomplish such a feat, Tarik Skubal took the American League Pitching Triple Crown. He was the best in the AL for wins, strikeouts, and ERA.

He joins Tiger pitching royalty of Justin Verlander (2011) and Hal Newhouser (1945) as the only pitchers to do this. Skubal finished the regular season with 18 wins, a 2.39 ERA, and 228 strikeouts. He is the first pitcher since the shortened COVID season in 2020 when Shane Bieber took the accomplishment. The last time a pitcher completed the task in a full season came in 2011 when Verlander did it.

“That’s pretty cool, to accomplish something like that. But what I’m most proud about is that we’re in the playoffs. That’s more fun than winning a Triple Crown. That’s kind of how I feel about it,” said Skubal.

Skubal is the 21st pitcher to win the Triple Crown since 1913 when earned runs became official. He is also just the third Tigers pitcher to record 18 or more wins since 2000 joining Verlander (2007, 2009-11) and Max Scherzer (2013-14).
