LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A company connected to a potential lease agreement with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reportedly backing away from a project that could turn 420 acres of public land into a solar farm.
When Michigan lawmakers got wind of the potential agreement between the DNR and RWE Clean Energy on Friday, several called for mass firings at the DNR. One of those lawmakers is State Senator Michele Hoitenga (R-Manton). She said on Monday that “the solar company no longer wants to expand on the 400 acres of public land in Gaylord, but this is far from over.”

Representative Ken Borton (R-Gaylord), another lawmaker who supports DNR firings, made the media rounds over the last 48 hours denouncing the DNR and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. She, along with her 2023 Democratic majority, passed laws require utilities in Michigan to move towards 100% clean energy sources by 2040. “[The media] continues to expose the hypocrisy of our governor and the DNR and their plan to destroy forests in Michigan. I will continue to fight this until it’s stopped!”
In addition, outcry on social media over the weekend shows many Michiganders support any firings and possibly defunding the DNR.
Given the recent decision by the Michigan DNR to designate public land for solar farms, lawmakers have called for mass firings and some Michiganders have suggested defunding the DNR. What say you?

The DNR, who has not responded to Michigan News Source, will issue a public notice on Tuesday.
