DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Since Nikolai Vitti was appointed as superintendent of Detroit Public Schools Community District in May 2017, the school district has seen a significant drop in the number of resident students leaving the district.

There were 16,139 students living within city of Detroit limits and enrolled elsewhere in 2017-18, according to state data. Those students either attended private schools, charter schools or were homeschooled. That number dropped to 11,997 in 2023-24, a 26% reduction.

The Detroit Public Schools Community District has also seen an increase in the number of students that attend who do not live within the resident boundaries. In 2017-18, there were 1,826 students who lived outside the district but attended Detroit Public Schools Community District. That increased to 2,766 in 2023-24.

Vitti has stabilized the district’s enrollment over the past five years. The district reported having 48,476 students in 2023-24. When Vitti started the district had 50,875 students in 2017-18. However, the district had 153,034 students in 2003-04 and had seen a mass exodus of pupils in the first part of the 21st century.
