LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who spent time on CBS Mornings on Monday, shared her thoughts on the “shock and awe” deportation campaign by the Trump administration and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials.

While promoting the young adult version of her book “True Gretch,” a CBS anchor asked her “Where do you stand on these [immigration] raids?” The anchor was referring to the immigration deportations carried out just in the past week where Border Czar Tom Homan said the targets are the “worst of the worst” including rapists and murderers.

Whitmer gave a vague answer, but emphasized that “we should treat all people with dignity at the very minimum.”

Whitmer did send Michigan’s National Guard to the southern border, but did so just weeks before the Nov. 5 election.

Meanwhile, several law enforcement officials in Michigan have said they don’t plan to work with ICE if the deportations make it to their jurisdictions.

Kalamazoo Township came under fire as well after word got out that it would consider an ordinance to adopt sanctuary city status and not work with ICE officials. The Kalamazoo Township Board of Trustee struck that item from Monday night’s agenda, but it could reappear at a later date.

David Combs, the Kalamazoo Township Supervisor, reminded people in the meeting why he ran for office. “I ran for public office on the promise that I would strive to ensure that every person in Kalamazoo Township is seen, welcomed, and protected,” he said.
