The Government Accounting Organization (GAO) reported in December 2022 that half of the military’s aircraft fleet – which is comprised of nine different types of aircraft – were more than 25 years old. The Air Force’s F-15EX is one of four replacement types of aircrafts that have been in development.
According to the GAO, the Air Force had 281 A-10s as of 2020 with the average age of those jets at 40.4 years.
Boeing was awarded a $22.9 billion contract in 2020 to produce 200 of the F-15EX Eagle IIs, according to Forbes.
