LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) announced that it was giving three school districts, including Flint Community Schools, $75 million to deal with infrastructure costs.

The MDE pointed to a recent study put out by the School Finance Research Foundation that stated there was a $23 billion need for infrastructure improvements across Michigan over the next 10 years.

The MDE stated that 51 school districts applied for grants asking for a combined $626 million, far more than the $75 million handed out.

Flint will get $35.9 million and will use the money to reduce the number of school buildings in use from eleven to seven and upgrade the existing buildings. Flint Community Schools enrollment has gone from 23,692 in 1999-00 to 2,617 in 2024-25.

Union City Community Schools received $23.6 million and North Central Area Schools will get $15.4 million.

Michigan’s K-12 school districts received $5.6 billion in federal COVID-19 relief and have until 2026 to spend that money.
