DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) sent the city of Detroit $346.8 million in the aftermath of the August 2023 flooding disaster.

The city council is set to approve the transaction at its May 20 meeting.

According to the city, there were five inches of rain in a six-hour period during the span of Aug. 24-26 as the city’s sewer system was not designed to handle such a downpour. That led to flooding on streets, highways and basements in residents and businesses.

Mayor Mike Duggan said he wants to use much of the money to repair and replace the failing alley drains and also build new flood-resilient affordable housing.

The city also had a 54-inch water transmission main break on Feb. 17, 2025 that caused widespread flooding in the area of Beard Street and Rowan Street in Southwest Detroit.
