LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Lansing School District wants to expand its competitive video-game teams to as many as five schools next year, celebrating the Lansing Tech team that qualified for the video-game playoffs.

The district started with one team and expanded to three schools last year.

Academia refers to teams that play video games as “e-Sports.” The Lansing School District also wants to hire e-Sport coaches at four schools in 2025-26. Earlier this year the district advertised on LinkedIn for eSports coaches and said salaries ranged from $1,877 to $8,919 a year.In December 2024, Michigan State University hosted the Michigan High School Esports League championships. MSU stated the showcase featured video games such as Rocket League, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Valorant.

“This event emphasizes the growing importance of esports in education and youth development, promoting teamwork, strategic thinking and digital literacy,” MSU’s College of Communication Arts and Sciences stated in a press release.
