LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Two bills are moving through the Michigan House that would prevent boys from playing on girls sports teams.
“Give female athletes a level playing field.”
The Government Operations Committee passed House Bills 4066 and 4469 last week which tie athletic participation to a child’s birth gender. State Rep. Brian BeGole (R-Antrim Township), who chairs the committee, said the bills are designed to ensure safety for all girls playing sports in Michigan.

“Women’s sports were created to give female athletes a level playing field to compete and showcase their athletic abilities,” said BeGole. “But we’ve seen this thrown into flux as biological boys and men compete in girls’ and women’s sports.
Boys in locker rooms with girls.
The movement of bills like these stem from a February 2025 executive order signed by President Trump which bars federal funding from any institution that allows boys or men to participate with girls and women in sports.
Kye Campbell-Fox, a full time lab manager at the Michigan State University Trans-ilience team, testified before the committee. He said that “I don’t believe seeing someone else’s body is traumatic” when addressing boys changing in girls’ locker rooms.

At the collegiate level, the NCAA aligned its policies with the executive order right away.
Student sports in Michigan.
Michigan News Source reached out to the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSSA) to find out if the governing body of student sports had shifted its stance. MHSAA spokesperson Geoff Kimmerly said the position has not changed since we spoke to them in March. The MHSAA allows boys to play in girls sports, and it has two waivers on record for particiaption.
“The MHSAA follows and will continue to follow all applicable state and federal laws,” the MHSAA statement read. “We are monitoring developments in this regard closely, including federal litigation challenging the recent Executive Order and potential changes to state law that have been introduced in the Michigan legislature. The MHSAA plays no role in either, however. Until those matters are resolved, the MHSAA is not in a position to change its current rules or policies, which again comply with applicable state and federal law.”
The bills now go to the full House.
