LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – In a blow to pro-life efforts and protections for women and their unborn babies, a Court of Claims judge wiped out the state’s informed consent and 24-hour waiting period laws.

The ruling from Judge Sima Patel, a 2022 Gov. Gretchen Whitmer appointee, comes after Michigan voters approved a measure that puts unlimited abortion access in the state’s constitution that same year.

Gov. Whitmer, who ran on a platform of “Fight Like Hell” concerning legal abortion through the moment of birth, issued a statement on the ruling. She called informed consent and the 24-hour waiting period “outdated.”

“This ruling gives us a chance to celebrate Women’s Health Week the best way we know how—by protecting and expanding women’s fundamental rights and freedoms.”

In contrast, President of Michigan Right to Life Amber Roseboom called Judge Patel’s ruling “reckless.”

“Abortion is the only medical procedure of its kind in which the patient now is expected to go in blind,” Roseboom said. “There is no question that women are at greater risk when they enter an abortion clinic in Michigan today than they were even a few years ago.”
