LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Donald Trump administration has come down against Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programs and gender identities in schools.

But the American Federation of Teachers – Michigan (AFT) union is doubling down on its commitment to what has been described as a woke ideology. The union is working with the Justice Leaders Collaborative to put on a May 28 workshop that embraces DEI initiatives.

AFT-Michigan sent out a message to its members on May 27 that stated:

“The Social Justice Primer is a brief introduction to key social justice theories and concepts including:

* Social identities such as race, class, gender, sexual orientation and ability
* Privilege and oppression
* The four levels at which privilege, oppression, and change manifest
* Implicit bias
* Microaggressions”

The email then ends with: “This workshop ends with concrete ideas for how you can show up in more inclusive and socially just ways in your life and work.”

AFT-Michigan represents and reported having 16,628 members as of 2024. The biggest union it represents is the Detroit Public Schools Community District teachers.
