DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – The amount of money the city of Detroit pays out in litigation for auto incidents dropped 66% in 2024.
The city of Detroit paid out $5.3 million in auto-related payouts in 2024, a drop from the $15.7 million the previous year.

The city paid out just $4.4 million in auto litigation settlements in 2020, the year of the COVID-19 lockdown. The settlements increased to $10.4 million in 2021, $12.4 million in 2022 and $15.7 million in 2023. That’s according to data the city recently released.
The Detroit Police Department has played a big role in the settlements. For example, in 2023, $8.6 million of the $15.7 million in auto settlements were as a result of an incident involving the police department.
The city of Detroit has averaged about 263 accidents a year involving Detroit Police Department vehicles, according to data provided by the city.
