LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit on May 29 brought by the ACLU of Michigan in April on behalf of four international students in the state whose F-1 student immigration statuses were terminated.
ACLU: “Cruel and arbitrary.”
These students studied at the University of Michigan and Wayne State University when their student visas were revoked, according to the ACLU of Michigan’s June 2 press release. Because the students’ immigration statuses have since been restored, the ACLU agreed to the order of dismissal. This order will also prevent the government from terminating the students’ immigration statuses in the future.

“The four international students studying in Michigan are among thousands across the nation who had their student immigration status abruptly and illegally terminated without warning or valid reason,” the release said. “The government’s actions have resulted in numerous lawsuits nationwide, most of which resulted in courts prohibiting the government’s cruel and arbitrary actions.”
This dismissal comes after the federal government ordered U.S. embassies to pause scheduling new interviews for student visa applications last week, according to a cable obtained by POLITICO.
Rubio works to “aggressively revoke visas for Chinese students.”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a press statement, said the U.S. State Department and Department of Homeland Security will work together to “aggressively revoke visas for Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields.”
In Michigan, international students from China accounted for more than one-fifth of the state’s total international student population in 2023-24, according to a federal document.
President Donald Trump said that international students from China who are worried about getting their student visas revoked are “going to be OK,” according to POLITICO.
“We just want to check out the individual students,” Trump said. “We have to and that’s true with all colleges.”

But the ACLU views the government’s actions as “cruel and arbitrary.”
“The aim of this lawless administration is to attack the rights of some, especially vulnerable communities like our clients, and to terrorize us all,” Ramis Wadood, ACLU of Michigan staff attorney who led the litigation, said. “The Trump regime will continue to come for our rights, and the ACLU will be just as relentless in pushing back on every front with all that we have.”
