HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Former Hamtramck Mayor Karen Majewski has taken her frustration with the national political climate to new and inverted heights by flying the American flag upside down in front of her home.

According to Majewski, a lifelong Democrat, the display isn’t about Hamtramck’s city government, which she has had issues with – but rather her view that the United States is in a state of constitutional and moral crisis under the Trump administration. Majewski believes the country is in distress and flying the flag upside down is a symbol of that distress.

The former Hamtramck mayor described the distress to The Review, a Hamtramck news website, saying, “I am outraged at the Trump administration’s rapid, deliberate, and systematic dismantling of our Constitutional guarantees, of the flaunting of the principle of separation of powers, of the sabotage of our economic well-being, of the hostility toward our educational infrastructure, of the undermining of our place as a worldwide symbol of democracy, of the betrayal of our allies, and much more.”

From public office to public protest.

Majewski, who served as mayor of Hamtramck for 16 years before stepping down in 2021, says the symbolic flag protest is deeply rooted in her understanding of patriotism and the Constitution. She told The Review, “There is nothing more American than standing up for our Constitution, for the ideals – as compromised as they’ve been throughout our history – on which this country was envisioned.”

Citing concerns about fascism, dismantling of rights, and attacks on democratic institutions, Majewski says she is acting out of civic duty and an obligation as an American to strive for a more “perfect union.”

She says she has received mostly positive responses to the flag display, with only two critics reaching out – and even those, she said, were respectful.

Not part of a political campaign.

Majewski emphasized that she has no plans to return to elected office. Instead, she hopes that she is inspiring others to find their own ways to engage in civic protest and remain vigilant.

Citing the country being in a Constitutional crisis with a traitor in the White House in charge of “remaking America into a Christo-fascist, misogynist and racist dictatorship,” she will continue to fly the American flag upside down until believes the country is no longer in crisis.
