LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – While Democrats nationwide scramble to protect illegal immigrants from arrest and deportation, their allies in Congress just took it a step further – doubling down by voting to let non-citizens continue to cast ballots in Washington, D.C.

On Tuesday, June 10, the U.S. House passed H.R. 884, which repeals a jaw-dropping D.C. law allowing non-citizens, including those here illegally, to cast ballots in local elections. The bill passed 266-148 with 56 Democrats joining every Republican in supporting the repeal. 148 Democrats voted against it.

In Michigan, the same dynamics held true. Every single Republican in the Michigan delegation voted “yea” but only three Democrats did. Three other Democrats voted “nay.” Not surprisingly, the Democrats voting against the bill were Michigan Representatives Debbie Dingell, Rashida Tlaib, and Shri Thanedar. Not only do these three appear unconcerned that illegal immigrants have bypassed the legal immigration process, they also support granting them the privilege to vote.

To their credit, Michigan Representatives Hillary Scholten, Kristen McDonald Rivet, and Haley Stevens broke with many of their Democratic colleagues by voting in favor of the bill alongside Republicans.

Multiple votes to protect illegal immigrants.

In the past, Dingell, Tlaib and Thanedar have voted on other legislation that is pro-illegal immigrant and puts the safety of Americans in jeopardy including a bill that would slap penalties on illegal aliens who flee from Border Patrol; a bill and would remove rapists, pedophiles, domestic abusers, stalkers and other predators from U.S. soil; and they voted against the Laken Riley Act, legislation that mandates that immigration authorities detain any undocumented immigrants charged with or convicted of crimes such as burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting. It also empowers state attorneys general to sue federal officials for failing to enforce immigration laws.

The votes against H.R. 884 by the Michigan Democrats come at a time when those in their party continue shielding illegal alien criminals from being deported and are speaking out all over social media about the Trump Administration’s crackdown with illegal immigration enforcement by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement).

Majority of Americans back Trump’s tougher immigration measures and National Guard deployment.

According to a CBS News/YouGov poll conducted June 4–6, 2025, 54% of Americans support President Trump’s immigration enforcement efforts, including the deportation of individuals in the country illegally. Additionally, a recent InsiderAdvantage poll indicates that 59% of respondents support President Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles in response to ongoing unrest related to ICE protests.

The bottom line? If Democrats in Michigan regain control of both the U.S. House and the Michigan House, what’s unfolding in D.C with illegal immigrants voting could easily wash up on the shores of the Great Lakes. Giving voting rights to non-citizens, especially those here illegally, is no longer a fringe idea. If voters look the other way, cities across the country, including right here in Michigan, could start handing ballots to those who have no legal right to be here – yet every right to shape who governs and how.
