DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – The Frederick Douglass Academy for Young Men, one of the top performing schools for Detroit Public Schools Community District, had expenses of $44,192 per pupil this year, almost three times what an average school district receives in Michigan.

The Frederick Douglass Academy for Young Men was one of 19 schools in the district that spent more money than was brought in. The school is also a rarity in it is a public school that is for boys only. It had 69 students in 2024-25 for grades 9th through 12th.

Overall, the school had $1.7 million in revenue and $3 million in expenses. The Detroit Public School District rated the Frederick Douglass Academy For Young Men with an “A” grade.

In addition, Edmonson Montessori was the only other one of the 19 schools listed that received an “A” grade from the district. Edmonson Montessori is an elementary school that had 260 students at a cost to the district of $16,694 per pupil.

Five of the 19 schools are being phased out by the district.The district lists 105 different school buildings on its website.

In 2023, the school district adopted a policy to annually review schools that operate in the red. The school district can close schools that continually operated in deficit mode.
