WASHINGTON, D.C. (Michigan News Source) – Three Michigan lawmakers serving in the U.S. House are teaming up to make sure Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac cannot be shut down by future administrations.

GOP Congressmen Tim Walberg, John Moolenaar, and Jack Bergman introduced the Line 5 Act this week. Canadian-based Enbridge Energy’s Line 5 pipeline has supplied propane to Michigan residents for decades without an environmental disaster. The company is spending $500 million of its own money to build a tunnel around it.

“Michiganders rely on Line 5 for a safe, secure, and reliable supply of energy to heat their homes and power our local economy,” said Rep. Walberg. “While the Trump administration has shown its steadfast dedication to securing American energy reliability, it is vital that we prevent future presidents from shutting down this safe and essential pipeline. Energy security is national security, and we must protect our critical energy infrastructure.”

In Michigan, the Whitmer administration has tried repeatedly to shut down the pipeline. However, those legal teams have racked up several court losses.  The energy pipeline provides more than half of Michigan’s propane supply.

Congressman Moolenaar said Michigan families rely on Line 5 to affordably heat their homes. He added, “Line 5 is a vital source of energy for Michigan families. Unfortunately, the previous administration did not recognize its value to our state and fought to shut down the pipeline with bureaucratic red tape,” Rep. Moolenaar said.
